How to Save Internet Shortcut Files

Internet Shortcuts are text files, saved with a '.url' extension in the Links folder of the user's profile.

To set up your browser to use Internet Shortcut .url files on this website, or on your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Save the text to your desktop as 'WhatULike.txt'
  2. No line breaks are allowed in the 'URL=' line.
  3. Ensure you are able to see file extensions (a Folder Options setting)
  4. Rename the file to 'WhatULike.url'
  5. Drag to the Internet Explorer Links Bar

Internet Shortcut Links

Internet shortcuts can also be created by dragging a link from a web page.

The following sample Internet Shortcut pops up a dialog box with the current location of the web page.

Drag this link to the Links bar

Security Popup Warning

When dragging links containing javascript to the links bar, you will receive a warning like the dialog box below.

You are adding a link that may not be safe. Do you want to continue?

If adding a link form an untrusted source, you should review the code within the Internet shortcut to ensure it is safe before continuing.
